Sweet In Defeat
Sha Tin (M9) – Sunday, 7 October 2018

This Sha Tin “mixed meeting” had a Turf track presented in GOOD condition with the running rail in the”B+2″ position and a AWT also presented in GOOD condition.
RACE 1: C5 - 1800m
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
This race was run at a very slow tempo so the win of Top Ace was creditable posting the third-best final-400m of the day in 22.41 seconds. It probably assisted those with the best turn of foot and with that slow tempo the race overall just rated fairly.
RACE 2: C4 - 1650m
Course: AWT Going: GOOD
There was a protest that was rightly sustained and the all-weather specilaists Diamond Friends and Let Us Win fought this one out. I am not sure there is much to take out of this race.
RACE 3: C3 - 1000M
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
It was a nice win from My Beginner’s Luck to lead throughout, and following his penalty he remains in this class and can be competitive again over this course and distance. The eye-catching run was from Diamond Dragon who appears to be looking for a step up in trip to 1200m or 1400m, and can be followed over that distance.
RACE 4: C5 - 1400M
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
A solid pace was set through the first two sections so the performance of Exponents was good. He boxed-on quite well to the line in a high pressure race and should he find a race where he can get an easier time on-pace, he can go well. He makes the Sweet In Defeat (SID) file.
RACE 5: C4 - 1400M
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
The steady tempo should have helped those closer to the speed so the win from Witness Hunter stepping up to 1400m was sound. The horse remains in the grade and can win again. Best Gift will make the SID file after posting the seventh-best final-400m on the day (22.39). He is on the brink of a drop in grade as well so it depends where his trainer decides to go to with him next time. Should he run in an unsuitable race and is dropped a point, he would be far too good for C5.
RACE 6: C4 - 1600M
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
This was the best rating turf race of the day and the leader Sichuan Boss went too quickly, but can be followed again. The winner Pakistan Friend is progressive and is destined to win more races, but he often starts very short in the market. One for the SID file is Righteous Mate who has no early speed and might need a step up in trip.
RACE 7: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
The early tempo was strong enough, with Endearing getting a nice trial and losing the race on protest. The return to Sha Tin was better for Mighty Maverick who might be able to pick up a race soon, but there was nothing much to see in this one.
RACE 8: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
The tempo was relatively even in this event, so it was a nice debut from Super Star who obviously is open to plenty of improvement. There was an eye-catching run from Alpha Hedge who has displayed little from a handful of starts but he powered to the line from near last in seventh-best final-400m (22.34) on the day and he might be one to follow going forward.
RACE 9: C3 - 1650M
Course: AWT Going: GOOD
They crawled in this race and it developed in to a sprint home. The winner King Genki had a nice run, but still posted the race-best final-200m and he can win again over the course and distance up in grade.
RACE 10: C2 - 1400M
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
For this grade they went very slowly through the first 1000m of this race and made it impossible for the backmarkers. Winning Faith was simply huge, he blew the start and posted the sixth-best final-400m of the day. A Happy Valley mile will be good for him. As good as he was, Easy Go Easy Win may have been better. He was back in the field and badly held-up, he ran the best final-200m (10.87) of the day. Obviosly the slow tempo helped him reel off some slick sectionals but with a better run in transit he can win as well. Both Winning Faith and Easy Go Easy Win make the SID file.
