Sweet In Defeat: Sha Tin (M77)

Sha Tin had a turf track presented in YIELDING condition with the running rail set in the “C” position. There was significant rain before the meeting and also early on.

At this meeting the track was rain-affected and the rail and being on-pace was the ideal spot to be, so hopefully finding a few that bucked the trend will be the key as Hong Kong just doesn’t get many wet tracks to reliably base your form around. The track pattern on the day was very strong.

RACE 1: C5 - 1200m
Course: TURF "C"     Going: YIELDING

As was the case with most of the races, they went quickly early in the first event. Moneymore (SID) and possibly Moon Peaks might be worth following given they both covered plenty of extra ground and sat off midfield.

RACE 2: C4 - 1200m
Course: TURF "C"     Going: YIELDING

For a Class 4, this race rated pretty well for the day. The pace was ridiculously fast early with Monkey Jewellery’s silly tactics of pressing forward overly aggressively. Glenealy Generals had the bias in his favour but the brutal tempo took its toll. However, stick with him. Lady First definitely has a race in him and he seems to be going quite well for Tony Cruz. Magic Supreme had every favour and was able to capitalise.

RACE 3: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: YIELDING

This rated as the best race of the day and clearly Mighty Valor excelled in the conditions. He was first-up after a trip to China and being “freshened” clearly worked wonders, or the conditions did. He is by Snitzel so perhaps it was as much the latter? Wood On Fire had excuses (blood in trachea). Super Eighteen (SID), Chikorita and Lucky Quality all ran well against the pattern.

RACE 4: C5 - 1800M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: YIELDING

This was the equal-worst race on the card, with the other Class 5. The only runner that might be worth considering going forward is the winner Great Smart and he might need another wet track. He was in the right spot during the running but made ground down the centre and this was a career-best return from him.

RACE 5: C4 - 1600M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: YIELDING

The pace was strong here and this race rated quite well. Leap Of Faith appreciated the conditions and found the right part of the track. Telecom Rocket (SID) was three-wide with no cover on a strong speed and ran on well in the wrong part of the track. It was a big run and he can be followed. Ezra wasn’t hopeless either.

RACE 6: C4 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: YIELDING

Another fast leader, Care Free Prince, that was able to win. This race rated quite well actually and I expect that there will be some horses that will come out of it and win. Eptiwins (SID) was a back for us but the pattern was against him, but his race-best final-200m (12.24) was sound work on the wrong part of the track. Heza Beauty also made ground and is close to a win.

RACE 7: C3 - 1000M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: YIELDING

Another straight race and another occasion where the outside (grandstand rail) was clearly the best place to be. One to follow from this race is Take What You Need (SID) who hit the line strongly and wasn’t on the best part of the track. His final-200m (11.88) was very good relative to others in the race.

RACE 8: C3 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: YIELDING

For a Class 3 this event didn’t rate very well, but it must be noted that the track was quite chopped up by this stage as well. Great Treasure did his usual thing and ran on, but under the circumstances it was a terrific effort. He might be a value chance to follow when he next competes.

RACE 9: C3 - 1600M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: YIELDING

The pace was solid in this one but the leader Hello Daddy kept going and managed to win. One of the worst rides for us here was Cheerful Leader, a horse who could have had the right position and ended up in the worst position. He still managed the 2nd-best final-200m (12.28) on the worst part of the track and after being hampered in deplorable conditions. A really poor ride. Smart Patch peaked on his run but was also very good and More Than A Horse hit the line well.

RACE 10: C2 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: YIELDING

Perfect Match had the pattern to suit and after working hard managed to hold on. Mongolian King was excellent late given the pattern and can be follower. Dan Control and Beauty Rush were okay, but had the pace to be advantaged by the pattern.
