Sweet In Defeat: Sha Tin (M71)

12.05.2021

Sha Tin had a turf track presented in GOOD TO FIRM condition with the running rail set in the “C+3” or outermost position.

The races on the AWT (dirt) track were run on a surface rated GOOD.

The all-weather track raced quicker than standard. Winners came from 0 to 2.1 lengths from the 600m, 1st to 5th position in running, 1-2w around the bend and lanes 1-8 in the home straight. So it was a dirt track where being on the pace was a big advantage and being on or near the rail in the run.

RACE 1: C5 - 1200m
Course: AWT     Going: GOOD

There were no major surprises here, Jade Theatre had the right run and given how weak Ka Ying Brilliance was, he took advantage to notch his first win. Regency Gem and Ever Strong worked home quite well but never threatened at any stage. Just an average race for the grade.

RACE 2: C5 - 1800m
Course: AWT     Going: GOOD

A sedate pace was set here and it became a sprint home, with Fairy Floss being the best placed to capitalise on that. He goes well on this all-weather surface but will need to improve to be competitive up in grade. Apolar Warrior sustained a good run but had the pace and pattern against him, so I would be happy to stick with him.

RACE 3: C3 - 1000M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

It was a terrific win here by Carroll Street. I would say the outside fence was significantly better once again and Winner Method just couldn’t quicken quite as well and perhaps 1200m will suit better now. The form will stack up going forward and the first two clearly look likely to rise higher in the ratings. I would be surprised if the pair dont reach 95+ in the ratings.

RACE 4: C4 - 1200M
Course: AWT     Going: GOOD

Striking Mr C winning might say enough about the all-weather track pattern on the night, he is often very weak at the business end. Demons Rock worked home very well on the best part of the track but I have some reservations around this form.

RACE 5: C4 - 1200M
Course: AWT     Going: GOOD

Gallant Legacy found the front and that was all she wrote. He went very quickly but that didn’t seem to matter on this track. The Best Hero (SID) covered a touch more ground and kept on well, while Holyshowcasing (SID) showed more than he has in the past on his first run on this surface and I’d be happy to stick with him.

RACE 6: C4 - 1650M
Course: AWT     Going: GOOD

It was a big win here by Gold Comet, the pace was strong and he relished that and the move up to a mile. Not too many horses win by 9-lengths in Hong Kong, so there was a lot to like about the victory. Nothing New pulled up lame, which was a shame, so we will never know with him. However, this race is all about the winner and at this point he is at least an 85+ horse on the all-weather over the mile. So more wins are in store.

RACE 7: C3 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

Super Winner found the lead, set a solid tempo and lasted. This might be his level now, unless they claim in this grade or he gets a track favouring those that can sit on-pace. He will be competitive but find it harder on an even track. Nothing special of note in behind although Star Performance hit the line okay.

RACE 8: C3 - 1200M
Course: AWT     Going: GOOD

The early pace was strong with everyone riding to the pattern and Man Star found the right spot. He deserved the win but it all fell in to place for him. Harmony Spirit (SID) was three-wide at the tail of the field and kept on well. His effort was excellent against the pattern and I don’t think it will be too long before he wins. Star Of Yuen Long was a great bet and delivered a huge run – he too will keep for another day.
