Sweet In Defeat: Sha Tin (M64)

17.04.2021

Sha Tin had a turf track presented in GOOD condition with the running rail set in the “C+3” or outermost position.

The races on the AWT (dirt) track were run on a surface initially rated WET SLOW, before it changed to GOOD following race 3.

Both the turf track and all-weather had signifcant patterns, favouring those on pace. On the turf, lanes 1 to 5 were a premium in the straight and the winners came from 0 to 4.5 lengths from the leader, but the majority needed to be closer to the lead.

The rail was the key on the all-weather track, as 4 of 6 winners were on the pace/rail with the other two winners making ground from a trip on the rail during the running.

RACE 1: C5 - 1200m
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

NOTE: Smart Charade returned with blood in the trachea. This was not a good race on the turf and was one that bucked the trend to an extent with Alloy Star coming from wider in the straight and off the pace to win (although he sat on the rail during the running). From that perspective, the winner was okay but I don’t think he beat much in this one and hard to trust the form.

RACE 2: C3 - 1000m
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

It was a good win by Carroll Street who posted a very similar number to when he won earlier this campaign. It was workmanlike but he is clearly a nice prospect and can probably improve over further. On the far side, When You Believe hit the line pretty well (11.30 final-200m) and might be one to take from the meeting.

RACE 3: C3 - 1650M
Course: AWT     Going: WET SLOW

The standout performance of the day came from So We Joy here. The pace was quite strong, as was the finishing speed and he won impressively. So We Joy can clearly be followed on this surface. Stick with Gameplayer Times (SID) who was three-deep for the trip and he can be followed on a fairer dirt track. The fact that he ran the second-best final-200m suggested a strong performance.

RACE 4: C4 - 1800M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

What was this race all about?!? There is an on-going enquiry into the ride on Daily Charm, which isn’t a surprise. Anyway, the less said, probably the better, but I havent seen hideous tactics like those on Daily Charm in a while. And we didn’t learn anything due to the tempo set through out the race.

RACE 5: C4 - 1650M
Course: AWT     Going: GOOD

It was a nice ride and win by Unite Spirit who handles the dirt surface and found the rail down the back which was a key to his overall success. Double Take had his chance but ran well again. Super Fast (SID) was wide for the entire trip and on inferior ground, but his closing sectionals were sound and he might be one to upgrade next time.

RACE 6: C3 - 1200M
Course: AWT    Going: GOOD

Flying Bonus got the conditions to suit and proved too good again. I would be wary backing him on a “normal” surface off his new mark now going forward. Sky Show was solid when not in the best ground. Harmony Spirit found the rail early and ran on very well, he can win one soon, and Namjong Sings was very good against the pattern.

RACE 7: C4 - 1200M
Course: AWT     Going: GOOD

Once again, Lucky Ruby ran well under these conditions and the first three in the running were the first three home. Little Thunder(SID) was going backwards at a key stage but rallied, and on a normal track can atone. He was very good against the bias.

RACE 8: C4 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

The sectionals here highlighted the bias with Unicornbaby leading all of the way, with his final-400m being 0.75 outside of standard yet he still won! Dragon Fortune (SID) was excellent, sat three-wide and closed nicely. He will be hard to beat next time on a fair track, and Zone D wasnt too bad either.

RACE 9: C2 - 1200M
Course: AWT     Going: GOOD

Red Desert doesn’t win out of turn, but was sound enough in this event. He found the rail and Kurpany didn’t, which was the key. I would be surprised if Kurpany couldn’t win on this surface. The form should work out well enough out of this race with several good runs from horses in behind the winner, including Victoriam and Will Power.

RACE 10: C3 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

The bias was probably even more pronounced by the end of the day and Taking Aim led from start to finish. Turquoise Alpha and Perfect To Great ran well in defeat against the pattern, but just be very weary of reading too much in to this form. Moreaki was given every chance and was probably suited, so I’m not sure where to for him? Probably going back to the dirt might suit.
