Sweet In Defeat

Sha Tin (M61) – Sunday, 7 April 2019

By Hutchi

Sha Tin had a track presented in GOOD condition initially, but it was upgraded to GOOD TO FIRM retrospectively from race 2. The running rail was set in the “B+2” position.

RACE 1: C3 - 1000m
Course: TURF "B+2"     Going: GOOD

The overall time was quick here and the pace sustained throughout the running. Overall, the race rated well and the form should stack up out of it. Bright Kid hit the line better than anything else (11.61 final-200m) and is on the brink of a drop in grade. He will probably need further and doesn’t make the SID file just yet, but he isn’t far from a win.

RACE 2: C4 - 1400m
Course: TURF "B+2"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

The early pace was solid and Monica was left handy three-wide with no cover, so his effort to battle on as well as he did was full of merit. The blinkers applied to Win Win worked nicely, he is progressive, whilst Ezra was just given too much to do and deserves another chance.

RACE 3: Group Two - 1200M
Course: TURF "B+2"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

This was more like an 800m contest, but on raw times they have posted 46.55 seconds and the race rated pretty well considering they were over a second outside standard through the first 400m. They will need to lift to repel an International Challenge based on how this race rated.

RACE 4: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B+2"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

This was a remarkable performance from the well-exposed Green Card to clock the equal fourth-best 200m (11.24) of the meeting. For the grade (Class 3), the race rated well and form should stack up well enough. Planet Star was quite good after setting the tempo and 1,200m might be preferable for him.

RACE 5: C4 - 1400M
Course: TURF "B+2"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

Given the track was racing fast, Care Free Prince was allowed a pretty easy lead and proved too good under those circumstances. Guy Dragon (SID) was fantastic. The tempo was against him, but he rallied strongly and whilst the overall race didn’t rate anything special, his effort was.

RACE 6: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B+2"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

A steady tempo was set early and then they sprinted, which meant the winner, War Lord even though he was three-wide without cover, was well-positioned given the tempo. Silver Fig (SID) looked unlucky and would have gone close to winning and he will be third-up next time and should be hard to beat. Diamond Brilliant lost on the bob of the head and is close to a win.

RACE 7: Group Two - 1600M
Course: TURF "B+2"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

This win didn’t rate up there with Beauty Generation’s best, but he was dominant again. A strong headwind down the back had an impact on the day and that probably suited Eagle Way who closed with a 33.12 final-600m, the ninth-best of the day. Not much to learn about the others however.

RACE 8: C2 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B+2"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

This race rated well, a genuine tempo was set, and the value of the 4.5kg claim was seen to full effect with California Fortune winning. It was a career-best return for Full Of Beauty, yet ironically it was his first defeat. He isn’t done with yet though and overall, I expect the form to hold up well.

RACE 9: C1 - 2000M
Course: TURF "B+2"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

Obviously the track was racing fast but the pace here was brutal and it rated very highly as a contest. Interestingly, Dark Dream’s wins in Hong Kong have both come off a very slickly run first half of the race. Waikuku had a torrid run wide without cover and can be forgiven. Ho Ho Khan is a beauty, he ran on well again and continues to perform with credit.

RACE 10: C3 - 1400M
Course: TURF "B+2"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

A slow tempo was set early here, especially given the conditions, so it was some win coming from near last by Noble Steed. Given the run he had, Craig’s Star should have won. Uncle Steve (SID) posted a final-800m of 45.28, quite remarkable. He can be followed. Overall, it rated as the worst race of the day and maybe those up ahead on the pace just aren’t much good.
