Sweet In Defeat

Sha Tin (M57) – Sunday, 24 March 2019

By Hutchi

07/04/19

Sha Tin had a track presented in GOOD condition with the running rail at the outermost “C+3” position. The all-weather track (AWT) was also rated GOOD.

RACE 1: C5 - 1400m
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

A steady first 600m was run here, which helped the leader and winner, although Ruminare was empty late. This was the worst quality race of the day, as one would expect given it was a Class 5. There’s not much to take from it, but The Sylph ran on okay against the tempo and might be suited to Happy Valley and Surewin closed off quite well with a 23.52 final-400m which was respectable under the circumstances.

RACE 2: C4 - 1000m
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

This winner, Voyage Warrior is a machine and destined for big things. This race rated very well on the day and for a galloper making his debut it was clearly very special visually and on also the clock. He ran 31.49 between the 800m to the 200m and although he was on the best part of the track, he had his rivals under pressure a long way from home. He clearly has Group 1 potential and I look forward to seeing him race in the future.

RACE 3: C5 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

This race rated very poorly on the day. The winner Natural Flare was held-up and probably has some upside, but I don’t want to read to much in to the form out of this race.

RACE 4: C4 - 1200M
Course: AWT     Going: GOOD

The pace was solid early in this one, as expected, being on the all-weather. From that perspective, Prince Of Gems was very good under top weight, being held-up, absorbing the strong tempo and staying on well. He is a nice horse and he makes the SID file and should prove hard to beat in an easier race.

RACE 5: C4 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

The overall time was outside of standard and after adjustments, was still a touch slower than where it should have been for the class. That said, Band Of Brothers on his second career start produced an excellent finish (11.52 sixth-best final-200m of meeting). He can go on with the job, while Win Win and Dor Dor are also close to shrugging their maiden status.

RACE 6: C3 - 1000M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

They ran this race fast early and they were tiring late! Sevens Heaven probably should have won with clear running, so he might be one to consider although there aren’t too many with significant upside here. That said, the race rated quite well and no major knock on the winner Multimillion either.

RACE 7: C2 - 1600M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

A farcical first 400m was set here and the first two past the post controlled the race from the front. It developed in to a sprint home where those back in the field couldn’t win. For the grade, it didn’t rate anything special and it’s hard to get a real gauge on the performances given the steady sections which suited Right Choice and Time To Celebrate.

RACE 8: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

The first part of the race was run quite quickly and it set things up nicely for the run on horses. From that perspective, Smart Leader was good given he worked early and it was always going to tell late in the race.

RACE 9: C3 - 1650M
Course: AWT     Going: GOOD

I don’t think I have ever seen a dirt race run so slowly through the first couple of sections. Naturally, it was dominated by those on-pace as a result. The “lead sectional” for the final-400m was over a second faster than standard, all told it’s hard to read too much in to this event.

RACE 10: C3 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

This race didn’t rate very well and I have my concerns about how strong the form out of the race will be. Reasonably even sectionals were set throughout and ultimately, the first four on the turn were the first four home. Amazing never really got a crack at them and looked unlucky. Cool Team (22.93 final-400m) closed well without ever looking a danger to the winner Beauty Spirit and he might be one to keep an eye on going forward.
