The fifth meeting of the season was a “mixed” meeting with racing on the dirt (all-weather track) and the turf. The turf track was upgraded to GOOD TO FIRM effective from race 4.

On Wednesday there were three runners from the Sweet In Defeat “Black Book” that raced at Happy Valley, with Country Star and Red Warrior both winning and Chiu Chow Kid running second! A great result for followers.

RACE 1: C4 - 1200m
Course: AWT     Going: GOOD

The winner Just Not Listening received eight points in the handicap and based on this win he can be followed on the AWT again. Not much else is worth noting.

RACE 2: C5 - 1200m
Course: AWT     Going: GOOD

The tempo wasn’t that strong here but that also allowed the chasers to remain in touch. Young Dreamer returned showing blood in the trachea and was quite good in defeat, so he might win if he finds a similar race, but basically this evet did not rate well.

RACE 3: C4 - 1200M
Course: Turf "A"     Going: GOOD

One for the SID file here with Precious Sweetie. The overall race didn’t rate well with a steady tempo and it was also a messy race when “the anchor” was dropped by the leaders. That being said, Precious Sweetie was taken back from a wide gate and when wound up, produced the fourth-best final-200m (11.64) of the meeting. Khaki also ran better on this occasion at his first start to Tony Millard.

RACE 4: C4 - 1600M
Course: Turf "A"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

With the sustained solid tempo for the first three sections this race rated highly, and leader just went too hard. From that point of view, Beauty Day was outstanding and it is one for the SID Black Book. He was issued two points for running second so he goes up in grade, but with a light weight he can be very competitive.

RACE 5: C4 - 1400M
Course: Turf "A"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

This was an on-pace dominated race with the final-800m run well under standard. Have Fun Together will find a race while Bellagio makes the SID file. He was disadvanatged by the race shape but still clocked the ninth-best final-200m (12.02) of the meeting at just his third career start.

RACE 6: C3 - 1200M
Course: AWT     Going: GOOD

Steady fractions on-speed meant this was going to be dominated by those on-pace. Beauty Energy needs one more run in defeat in this class and then he can win a mile contest in C4, preferably on the AWT as his English form was on the Polytrack.

RACE 7: C3 - 1800M
Course: Turf "A"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

The first 1000m of this event they went far too hard and naturally those on-pace had to puncture. However, this race rated almost the same as the C4 over shorter, so given that early speed it was disappointing the overall figure wasn’t better. I won’t be relying on this race too much at this stage, with the winner Gorgeous King the only highlight.

RACE 8: C3 - 1000M
Course: Turf "A"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

Not much to see here with Triumphant Jewel going back-to-back. But there was an eye-catching run from Sumstreetsumwhere who posted the best 600m, 400m, 200m of the race without ever getting in to the finish. He looks clueless at this stage, but clearly has ability. He won over 1400m in NZ and may be one to watch next time with the future in mind.

RACE 9: C3 - 1400M
Course: Turf "A"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

A steady first half and solid second half gave most runners their chance in this one. The winner Invincible Fresh only received five points for the win and he will be competitive again in a similar race.

RACE 10: C2 - 1400M
Course: Turf "A"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

This race was run in a solid manner for the first three sections. I liked the run of Joyful Trinity from near last, he quickened-well from the 600-200m and peaked late under the weight. Between the 400-200m he ran a 10.53 and now off a mark of 100 in the handicap, he might be able to find a Class 2 race. The concern is (albeit racing in higher grades) that he hasn’t put his nose down to win for two years.
