Sweet In Defeat
Sha Tin (M49) – Sunday, 24 February 2019

Sha Tin had a turf track presented in GOOD condition with the running rail in the “B+2” position. The AWT was also presented in GOOD condition.
RACE 1: C5 - 1400m
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
The first half of the race was run faster than the second half but overall this was the worst rating race of the day. Never Better continues to run on well, but that’s always the script for him. Nothing special here.
RACE 2: C2 - 1600m
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
A small field and an incredibly sedate tempo was set through the first 800m, but they zoomed home here and this was the best race of the day. Time To Celebrate posted the best final-400m (22.29) at the meeting, and based on this, he will be competitive again in this grade.
RACE 3: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
The pace was solid here, so the leader Voyage Star shouldn’t have been able to hold on, yet the first two in the running were the first two home. Diamond Dragon (SID) had a race-best final-200m (11.68) and given the pattern, was sound in defeat. He can win in this grade.
RACE 4: C4 - 1400M
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
A solid tempo again and the leaders should not have been able to hold on, but the first three on the turn were the first three home, Planet Star, Hinyuen Swiftness and Chairman Lo. Great Harvest (SID) was never on the track, and $249 in the market. His run wasn’t hopeless for his second career start and he might go out too big when he next appears.
RACE 5: C4 - 1650M
Course: AWT Going: GOOD
A fast first half was set here and it eventually took its toll. (Note: Jin Jin King as found to be lame the next day). Overall, the race rated okay and I have to be forgiving of those that raced close to the speed as the strong early tempo set things up for the chasers.
RACE 6: C4 - 1600M
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
This was a race that didn’t rate well. In the context of the day, it was one of the worst races and there doesn’t seem much depth to it. Ruletheroost and Victorious Leader both worked home quite well and might be ones to consider later, but I’m not sure about the form out of this event.
RACE 7: C2 - 1000M
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
This race rated okay, and the winner Refined Treasure might be the only one worth following going forward. He clearly has upside and it was a soft win in the end. Look for him to step up in trip (1200m) at some stage soon. He should cope with this okay.
RACE 8: C3 - 2000M
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
A muddling tempo to this race and best ride won it with Tianchi Monster also aided by a nice draw. The pace picked up noticeably from the 1200m to 800m, but overall the event rated quite well and the likes of Cheerful Star and Happy Sebring continue to run well from back in the field. Vincy was good considering he was close enough to the pace throughout.
RACE 9: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
The winner Full Of Beauty is smart and his figures were better again for this win. He will take some beating up in grade with a light weight. Honest Way is knocking on the door and should win one soon, and Bright Kid was never tested at any stage but seemed to have a fair bit to offer. He might be worth a closer look next time.
RACE 10: C3 - 1650M
Course: AWT Going: GOOD
King Genki led all the way and this race rated pretty well for the grade. Glorious Artist should have won and he should go close next time with better luck.
