Sweet In Defeat

Sha Tin (M47) – Sunday, 17 February 2019

Sha Tin had a track presented in GOOD condition with the running rail at the “A+3” position.

RACE 1: C4 - 2000m
Course: TURF "A+3"     Going: GOOD

The pace really picked up in the middle stages of this event, so all-in-all, it was a solid win by Garlic Yeah, but the race didn’t rate anything special. It should have been set up for the chasers, and they didn’t make much of an impression. That said, the ride on Amazing Agility was particularly poor and not surprisingly the stewards had a few words with the rider. He might be one that is worth sticking with.

RACE 2: C4 - 1000m
Course: TURF "A+3"     Going: GOOD

Overall this race rated about where it should for a C4. That said, Trust Me will make the SID file. He was baulked at a vital stage and could have gone much closer with even luck. It was just his second career start and this run rated many lengths better than his debut.

RACE 3: C4 - 1400M
Course: TURF "A+3"     Going: GOOD

This race rated okay for the class with a reasonably solid tempo set through out. Sam’s Love is pretty close to a win but he probably needs a moderate race in this grade and a barrier draw close to the rail. Positively High had excuses working too hard on-pace and he could be interesting down in grade.

RACE 4: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "A+3"     Going: GOOD

For the class, this race only rated fairly. The tempo wasn’t strong and they didn’t come home that quickly either. From that perspective Ultimate Glory ran very well, but this ageing galloper seems to always find one too good for it. God Of Drgaon closed with a race-best final-200m (11.53) and might be one to keep safe going forward.

RACE 5: C2 - 1400M
Course: TURF "A+3"     Going: GOOD

The pace was slow, very slow for the class and it devloped into a sprint home. Waikuku posted the best final-400m (22.25) at the meeting off a dawdle and he is clearly looking for further. However, off a sit-and-sprint, it’s hard to take too much else out of this race which obviously didn’t rate well.

RACE 6: Group 1 - 1400M
Course: TURF "A+3"     Going: GOOD

This was clearly the best rating race of the day, as you would expect. It was all over very early with Beauty Generation controlling the race and he actually rated in line with his HKIR success. Conte was very good also, but the 1400m stretches Beat The Clock who clearly peaked on his run over this trip.

RACE 7: Group 1 - 2000M
Course: TURF "A+3"     Going: GOOD

This was a muddling-run race, fast early, then a slackening of speed, before eventual winner Exultant took off. He was too strong and this win rated a tad below his HKIR win, but basically in line with it. This was a career-best return by Southern Legend and considering it was his first go over the trip in Hong Kong, it bodes well for his future and he might be competitive in the QEII Cup.

RACE 8: C3 - 1400M
Course: TURF "A+3"     Going: GOOD

It was a nice front running ride by Keith Yeung on Happy Force to lead from start to finish. This race rated quite well for the grade and clearly the eye-catching run was Noble Steed. He seemed to go even beter ridden with a touch of patience and posted the 11th-best final-400m (22.51) at the meeting and accordingly makes the SID file.

RACE 9: 4yo Series - 1800M
Course: TURF "A+3"     Going: GOOD

This race rated well-enough as expected and it was a delightful front-running exhibition on the winner Mission Tycoon who was superbly handled by Derek Leung. All that said, he was one of six horses on the day that were leading at the 400m mark and managed to hang on, with Garlic Yeah, Beauty Generation, Happy Force and Kingsfield (basically) leading all of the way in their respective races. From that perspective, Furore was enormous. HIs final-800m (46.18) was easily a race-best and he is on-target for the Hong Kong Derby.

RACE 10: C3 - 1400M
Course: TURF "A+3"     Going: GOOD

Another leader and another winner here with Kingsfield. The tempo and pattern helped, so from that point of view, Racing Fighter was excellent, and Defining Moment was sound too. All that said, the race as a whole didn’t rate anything special but they seemed two of the better runs in the race.
