Sweet In Defeat
Sha Tin (M41) – Sunday, 27 January 2019

Sha Tin had a turf track presented in GOOD condition with the running rail at the “B+2” position. The all-weather track (AWT) was also rated GOOD.
RACE 1: C4 - 2000m
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
They couldn’t have gone any slower in this event and it was literally a sprint home over the final 400m, with the race rating poorly overall. Amazing Agility displayed the best turn of foot but not much can be taken from this one with such a pedestrian tempo.
RACE 2: C4 - 1000m
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
This race didn’t rate overly well, with Winner Supreme and Meridian Genius drawing clear of their rivals over the minimum trip. Soccer Master hit the line with a race-best final-200m (11.62) and he might not be far from a win, but he also might need some more experience.
RACE 3: C2 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
This race rated okay but all plaudits go to the winner Regency Legend who, off a slowish tempo, rallied under 60.5kg to win. This win didn’t quite rate with his other performances but with a lighter weight next time he can bounce back. Also because of the tempo there weren’t large margins from first to last so it’s with some caution that I’ll treat the overall form from this event.
RACE 4: C5 - 1400M
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
A Class 5 and it was the second-worst rating race on the card. Money Winner closed well from back in the field and he might be able to find a similar race before the season ends and District Express is another in that bracket as he was close enough to a solid tempo.
RACE 5: C4 - 1200M
Course: AWT Going: GOOD
This was a dominant win to Noble De Love on this all-weather surface and he was far too good. All that said, Deal Maker (SID) was slowly away and probably had some excuses. His final-400m was similar to the winner and he should be able to find a similar race in the short term and take some beating.
RACE 6: C3 - 1200M
Course: AWT Going: GOOD
The pace through the early stages was strong and that took its toll on a few. It was a solid win by Gameplayer Emperor, but the one to keep an eye on going forward will be Double Valentine. He was somewhat aided by those up front cutting each other up but the American-bred showed he likes the surface and there should be a race for him on this surface.
RACE 7: Group 3 - 1800M
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
I’m not sure what was going on in this race. Ultimately, the well-backed favourite won the event but as for the tactics on Pingwu Spark and Time Warp……well they weren’t given any chance on a ridiculous tempo. The race rated well though and the winner Exultant confirmed he is back in good order following his Vase victory during HKIR week.
RACE 8: 4YO Classic Series - 1600M
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
Just an even tempo was set in the Classic Mile and Furore receieved an economical run but displayed an explosive turn of foot. Dark Dream amongst others was hampered in the straight and was excellent after going back from a wide gate. The winner, however, was also very good. Mission Tycoon was held up for the majority of the straight and boxed on quite well.
RACE 9: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
An even tempo was set here and it was better to be closer to the speed rather than further back. Shimmer And Shine was inconvenienced early and held-up in the straight, so he can be followed. Aerohappiness was back after a freshen-up and loomed to win but couldn’t, but there was plenty of merit in his run. He seems better when ridden with a touch of patience.
RACE 10: C3 - 1400M
Course: TURF "B+2" Going: GOOD
For this grade this race didn’t rate well due to the lack of tempo during the middle stages and it was really quite slow with the first two past the post (King Opie & Perfect Match) settling on pace. From that perspective, Lakeshore Eagle was better than it appears visually and Monster Kaka was very good also. He posted a race-best final-200m (11.46) with top weight and might be one to keep an eye on considering this was his first local outing.
