Sweet In Defeat

Sha Tin (M23) – Sunday, 25 November 2018

Sha Tin had a turf track presented in GOOD condition with the running rail at the “C” position. During the meeting there was significant rain which caused the track to be officially downgraded to GOOD TO YIELDING from race 7 and then YIELDING from race 8.

RACE 1: C4 - 1000m
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

The first half of the race was run solidly and the second half rather weakly resulting in the overall race not rating very well, almost a second outside of standard. What A Legend closed strongly, and was clearly the strongest at the finish – it was a highly encouraging debut. He will benefit from the experience and makes the SID file with plenty of upside to come.

RACE 2: C5 - 1400m
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

The first-1000m was run fast here and the final-400m was rather weak from the evetual winner Supreme Witness. However, Money Winner was quite good in defeat and is definitely looking for further (he could barely keep up early). I think this race will stack up okay going forward, with Natural Flare another likely to post a win soon.

RACE 3: C2 - 1000M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

A relatively even pace was set throughout this event and it was a deserved win to Wishful Thinker who has a future, but there wasn’t much else to take from this event.

RACE 4: C4 - 1600M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

It was a well-rated ride in front by Purton on Romantic Chef and with a very soft second sectional, the winner was never going to come from midfield or worse. Off the slow tempo, Ever Laugh and Amazing Agility produced some of the better late splits on the card and for a race that didn’t rate well overall, the efforts of those two did have some merit. Neither are likely to win out of turn but might appreciate a step up in trip.

RACE 5: C4 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

The first-800m was run relatively steadily and the final-600m was certainly quicker, with the winner Follow Me posting the best-200m sectionals over the final three-furlongs. He will be hard to beat again on the back of this win, which rated as the best performance on the day. Golden Four was respectable in defeat and he can make the SID file considering the blinkers went on this time and he remains on the same handicap mark for that performance.

RACE 6: C4 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

This race was run pretty much to standard on raw times, but the track was rain-affected (although not officially) and they found it hard to make an impression. Pearl Champion was clearly a runner that bucked the trend of the race and this was a career-best run for him. He can make the SID file.

RACE 7: C1 - 1600M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD TO YIELDING

The track was clearly rain-affected by this stage, but the tempo was quite brutal early even in the conditions. I’m not sure we can learn much from this event under the circumstances. That being said, Dinozzo hit the line well-enough and might be worth a second look when he next appears.

RACE 8: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: YIELDING

The overall time was more than two seconds outside the standard and many horses weren’t getting through the conditions and finding it hard to make ground. Kasi Farasi ran well and backed up a nice run on debut, so I would be happy to give him another chance.

RACE 9: C3 - 1600M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: YIELDING

It was a huge run from Pakistan Friend who went way too hard in the lead, partly being hampered by the loose horse. He can atone in the near future and is one to stick with.

RACE 10: C2 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: YIELDING

A brutal tempo was set up front here and it was another incredible run in defeat from Superich who worked hard and wide early, was a sitting shot late and very brave in defeat to World Record who had the race set up nicely for him. The runner-up can be followed, he is going to win more races and was particularly good in defeat.
