Sweet In Defeat

Sha Tin (M17) – Sunday, 4 November 2018

By Hutchi

The winter grass was sewn at Sha Tin two weeks prior, which explained the time between turf meetings there. On the day, the turf track presented in GOOD condition with the running rail in the “C+3” position.

RACE 1: C4 (Restricted 3yo) - 1200m
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

A relatively sedate lead speed was set here and the first five on the turn were the first five home. Hainan Star (previous SID) has run very well in defeat again, and with a ‘more normal’ tempo, he would have been hard to beat. He is close to a win considering he clocked the second-best final-200m (11.43) of the day.

RACE 2: C4 - 1000m
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

This race rated just ‘okay’ and the Jimmy Ting run continued with Diamond Master winning – he has an amazing strike rate in his first season as a trainer. This race was further evidence that the near-side bias looks to be a thing of the past. All the same, it was a nice debut from Multimillion who should be posting a win in the short term against similar opposition. He makes the SID file.

RACE 3: C5 - 1600M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

This was a race that was quite muddling in the manner that it was run and the horses that received “cheap trips” finished one-two. Indigenous Star was having his first start in this grade this season and ran on well. He can win soon, but needs to draw a gate and get the right run off a genuine speed.

RACE 4: C4 - 1600M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

The first half of the race was run in a steady fashion and that aided My Winner (even though he raced three-wide without cover) who battled on okay. Ultimately here, the on-pacers aren’t much good and those tracking the speed capitalised. All told, it was a good win by Let Us Win (another for Jimmy Ting) but I have reservations about the overall form of this event.

RACE 5: C4 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

A pedestrian tempo was set up front here, just less than 6 lengths outside the class benchmark to the 400m. Having said that, our main play Precious Sweetie simply didn’t deliver anything like his last couple of starts. Officially, there was no issue revealed afterwards. There was one that caught the eye, Fantastic Show, who was taken back at the start and posted the equal fourth-best final-400m (22.69) at the meeting. He was 193-1……hopefully we get a similar price next time?!

RACE 6: C3 - 1000M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

Styling City delivered a solid win in quite good time. However, off a slightly stronger lead speed posted a final-600m (33.42) slightly slower than the other 1000m winner on the day, Diamond Master (33.33). I’d say Styling City is going to be better over further as well.

RACE 7: Group 3 - 1800M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

This was clearly the best race of the day in terms of how it rated. The first 600m was very slow (7.9 lengths) and then from the 1200m the pace picked up noticeably. One-two in the running (Time Warp and Glorious Forever) were one-two home and although they were empty late, all honours went to Time Warp considering he carried top weight and conceded plenty to his younger brother. Missing the start on Glorious Forever was costly.

RACE 8: C3 - 1800M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

The first 600m was quite quickly here and then the pace steadied. They were pretty much in two-by-two formation around the bend. It was a good win by Ho Ho Khan given his momentum was stopped at the top of the straight and he still managed to lift. This race rated well and I would trust the form, including the winner, to go close again considering his final 200m of 11.55 was the eighth best of the day.

RACE 9: C3 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

This race didn’t rate well for the calibre of horse taking part. The end result was the winner Mr Wealth delivered a time that was well outside standard and notwithstanding a couple of entrants that had hard luck stories, I have my doubts about the strength of this event.

RACE 10: C2 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

Superich was a good thing beaten here, he was simply held-up until it was too late. He clocked the fastest last-200m (11.32) of the day and should have won. He will be hard to beat next time, as this is a race that rated well due to the fast early speed until the 800m mark.
