Sweet In Defeat: Sha Tin (M08)

01.10.2020

Sha Tin had a turf track presented in GOOD condition with the running rail set in the “B” position with a false rail set 6m from the outside, leaving a home straight course width of 20m.

With the rail in the “B” position, the track played fairly, but the wind was a factor – a headwind in the straight. Winners either led or came from within 7-lengths from the leader at the 600m, and from the rail to three-wide in running. In the home straight there were winners in lanes 1 through 9.

Overall, it was a fair racing surface, but that wind meant faster early sectionals and slower run home times. However, the straight race was where the main adjustment on times has taken place.

RACE 1: C4 - 1200m
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

Quick early sectionals were set and then it was a slow run home, which may have been a factor relating to the wind. Pegasus Glory posted a similar number to his debut to take this race out and he clearly has upside. He stays in the Class 4 grade and will be competitive. Run Run Good hit the line quite well and looked very green through the early stages and should benefit with the run.

RACE 2: C3 - 1800m
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

Many of these regularly line up against one another and this time, London Hall proved too good. The tempo was slow through the early stages and London Hall had a nice run on the leader’s back. It was literally a sprint home and More Than A Horse was probably one of the better runs, given his rider gave his mount too much to do. Nothing special to note here.

RACE 3: C4 - 1600M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

The pace was only even and Light My Day attained a nice lead and proved too good, but not sure this race will turn out to be anything special. Fast Pace was three-wide with no cover from a low draw and battled to the line okay. Natural Storm ($5.80 to $3.20) held-out Fast Pace early, which cost him late when held-up in the straight and he had a race-best final-200m (11.84) which contained merit. He makes the SID file and should be winning soon, especially as now it looks as though he can take closer order in the running.

RACE 4: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

It was a nice debut from Everyone’s Delight, who enjoyed a good run in the race. Easy Fit was posted three-wide with no cover and had clear excuses, but the winner was worth more than handicap penalty (6-points) given he was only clear late after being held in a pocket. His final-200m (11.24 3rd-best at meeting) was very good, albeit off a slow pace. Outside of the winner, I’m not sure how good the rest will be.

RACE 5: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

Sky Field continues his rise through the ranks and off a slow tempo with 60.5kg he has managed the 8th-best final-600m (33.88), which was good work. He can certainly reel off a good sectional but still hasn’t posted a big number as such overall. There is more in store for him, but he is going to need to improve, and sort out his exit from the barriers. Keep You Warm was second-up and battled to the line pretty well. It was only his eighth Hong Kong start, so there might be a race in him shortly.

RACE 6: C5 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

The pace was good and for the grade the race rated okay. Fox Cheunger enjoyed the right run, as did the runner-up For Fun’s Sake. The early pace too its toll on those closer to the front end, and those in rearward positions just aren’t that good. Moneymore arguably had its chance. It was not much of a race.

RACE 7: Group 3 - 1000M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

Note: Big Party – lacerations pre-race, Victoriam – didn’t feel “right in behind”, Yee Cheong Baby – “blood in trachea”. It was a dominant win by Computer Patch, who likes the straight. He is sharp and goes through his gears quickly and was far too good for this opposition. It was a soft win, notwithstanding there was some issues for a number of the others as highighted. There were no excuses for Gold Chest, but a softer run first-half of the race than the second-half, suited the winner more than him.

RACE 8: C4 - 1400M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

The pace was genuine here and the winner Angel Of My Eyes got the right run, but is clearly better when ridden with a touch of patience. In addition his second-up form is solid. Mighty Power is ready to win. Seaweed Fortune is clearly looking for a step up in journey and his last-200m (11.72 race-best) was solid.

RACE 9: C3 - 1400M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

The pace was strong in this event and it was a very strange win to Circuit Hassler, who was basically hard-ridden throughout but produced a terrific final-400m. Have we unearthed something new with Circuit Hassler who normally settles handy? Trust Me (SID) was terrific. He was clearly the best horse of those on pace and given how hard he worked, he can be followed again. Heza Beauty remains in good form and should pick one up soon. California Levee gets a drop in class following this run and will be hard to beat down in grade, in the right race, so he makes the SID file too.

RACE 10: C2 - 1400M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

Note: Amazing Chocolate – Blood in trachea, Star Performance – check 1350m, not fully tested). The pace was solid through out and it was a terrific win to Mighty Giant, who was fresh after 6-months and still proved too strong. One would assume that he will only improve off this outing as well and looks a bright prospect. Star Shine made our SID file following his first-up run and I will be sticking with him, he is just looking for the mile now. Star Performance received a check early and then raced in restricted room late.
