Sweet In Defeat

Sha Tin CNY (44) – Thursday, 7 February 2019

By Hutchi

15/02/2019

Sha Tin had a track presented in GOOD condition with the running rail at the outermost “C+3” position.

January Sweet In Defeat Successes:

Grade One – 1st @ $6.20 ($7.00 best corporate)

Gamechangers – 1st @ $3.30 ($4.70 best corporate)

Splendour And Gold – 1st @ $4.50 ($5.50 best corporate)

Solar Wai Wai – 1st @ $1.85 ($2.05 best corporate)

RACE 1: C4 - 1800m
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

The pace picked up from the 800m and with the increase in pressure a fair way from home it probably should have suited those off midfield, so a solid win by Red Elysees. Full Of Chances made some late headway so was okay and overall this race rated quite well for the grade. However, many of these line up against one another week-in-week-out and each seems to get his turn.

RACE 2: C5 - 1600m
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

The pace was solid through the early stages and couldn’t be sustained, with Savvy Seven argubaly going for home a touch too early and being run down late by Management Star. The runner-up goes up in class and will find it harder from there but then again he was definitely better with the blinkers applied. Young Glory is close to a win but might want further than 1600m.

RACE 3: C5 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

The worst rating race on the card. All that said, Sunny Orient seemed to be building the revs when pushed back into a pocket and I would be happy to give him another chance therefore, but overall, I’m not sure how strong the form will be.

RACE 4: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

This race just rated fairly for the meeting. It would appear that Happy Alumni didn’t have the best luck in running and from two race starts he has shown enough to suggest he will be winning. Just about all the same can be said for Perfect Pair. One that may have flown under the radar to exent was Levante who might be worth following after 2 more runs and a drop in class.

RACE 5: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

A slow tempo and sprint home, so it was some effort from Solar Wai Wai to win especially after considering he was severely checked in the early stages. He goes up in grade, but based on his overall effort in closing this well after suffering adversity, he can be followed. He also posted the fourth-best final-400m (22.33) of the meeting. However, not sure how reliable the form will be outside of him.

RACE 6: C4 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

A pretty slow first-600m was set before the pace increased here. Splendour And Gold showed nice promise on debut and rallied strongly (11.48 11th-best 200m of the meeting) to score. He has more scope. The runner up Win Win (SID) makes the file, as although he enjoyed a charmed run, he has shown enough promise to win a similar contest. Bingo Hero (SID) missed the start and ran on quite well also and is now eligible for a lower grade. He can be followed on his next start.

RACE 7: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

This race rated in line with the Class (3) and it was quite a win from Full Of Beauty. You just don’t see them sit four-wide without cover at Sha Tin over the 1200m and win… yet he did. The tempo probbaly helped, but it was still quite a remarkable win. Honest Way seemed to get his chance, he rattled home again, but with him it seems to be like groundhog day. (Note: Top Score was found lame the day after)

RACE 8: C1 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

The best class of race of the meeting and it was the best rated performance as well. An excellent win to What Else But You but there was not much else to see.

RACE 9: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

An even tempo was set here and 3.5 lengths covered nine of the 12 runners. Most of these seem to be on their mark, but Earth Trilogy was sound considering this was his debut. He hit a flat spot but worked home well over the final furlong (11.38 race-best) and there should be some improvement to come. However, overall, I’m not sure how much depth there is to this field.

RACE 10: C3 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

A slick first 400m and then a steadying of the speed but overall the race rated quite well. Roundabout (SID) produced the best-400m (22.15) at the meeting on a part of the track not many ventred to. He is an ageing galloper but there was some merit to this performance and he did win around this time last year off the same mark (69).

RACE 11: C3 - 1600M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

It was a nicely rated ride in front on Cordyceps and de Sousa made every post a winner on him in standard time for the class. As far as overall ratings, it was a sound win, bearing in mind most of the races on the day were outside of standard. Smiling Pride was three-wide with no cover and had excuses. Not Usual Talent (SID) was much better up to a mile and closed strongly, probably peaking on his run a touch. He has only had three local starts and is worth following.
