Sweet In Defeat: IJC Night @ Happy Valley (M28)

09.12.20

Happy Valley had a turf track presented in GOOD condition with the running rail set in the “B” position.

The track played around standard time and raced pretty fairly overall. Winners came from 0 to 7.2 lengths from the leader at the 600m, 1st to 12th in running and 1-4 wide, with lanes 5 through 21 used in the straight. There was one winner on the rail in the straight, in a sit and sprint, and once again, I’m not covinced that the rail in the home straight was ideal.

RACE 1: C5 - 1650m
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

It was a great ride by Purton on Run The Table to land the spoils. The pace was very strong here so he was vulnerable late and the likes of Nitro Express and Enjoyable Success made late headway but never really looked likely. Baby Storm (SID) was awkwardly placed at a key stage and I think he wins with even luck. There was plenty of merit in his run given his proximity to the pace.

RACE 2: C5 - 1200m
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

The was the worst race on the card. The pace was sound but they crawled home and I have doubts surrounding this form. Great Harvest produced a very fast final-200m (11.53 vs 12.28) compared to Speedy Optimist, who arguably got the right run and was lucky to fall in and win. The latter horse might be better suited over further. However, Great Harvest would be the only one I would take from the race.

RACE 3: C4 - 1650M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

The pace was solid in this event and once again it was a nice ride aboard the winner Incanto Prepared who quickened well, and the execution of the ride was sublime. Fast Pace was okay, but might be looking for further now although the early tempo meant he was a touch vulnerable late. Overall, the form should stack up well enough out of the race.

RACE 4: C4 - 1000M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

The pace was slow and it was a sprint home, with Gouten Of Garo getting it easy enough on the lead. Happy Good Guys was three-wide with no cover and brave, while Happily Friends caught the eye with a solid final-200m (11.22). However, he doesn’t appear to have the race-smarts just yet and might need some more experience.

RACE 5: C4 - 1650M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

The pace was even here and this race rated a lot lower than what I would have expected going in to the race. That said, Maldives (SID) hit the line with some exceptional late splits (11.36 8th-best of the meeting) and considering this was his fourth run of the preparation, he looks ready to win now. Royal Racer is racing well but needs more pace in his races. Gallant Crown was good considering this was his first run over the trip, so he might be worth sticking with in this distance range.

RACE 6: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

It took 19 starts but Wood On Fire broke his maiden status in pretty good style and certainly deserved the win. In the process he produced the best final-200m (11.04) at the meeting. Overall, the race rated okay, Inno Legend ran to his mark which wasn’t good enough but he should find a race soon.

RACE 7: C3 - 1650M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

A big number was posted here by Gift Of Lifeline, on the back of a solid tempo. The form should work out well, with Smiling City (SID) being brave again, given his position in running and he should be winning one soon. Helene Wisdom Star was good on his third local start, while Savaquin was three-deep the trip and battled-on well considering. I’m happy to follow the form out of this one.

RACE 8: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

Harmony N Blessed is now two from two and this was a determined victory. He is clearly going to win more races, while Grateful Heart was sound in defeat. Wind N Grass (SID) is ready now, he ran on very well indeed from near last and could fare better from a more favourable draw. Much the same applies to What A Legend.

RACE 9: C2 - 1800M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

The pace was good overall here and this race rated well. Glorious Artist won his first race on the turf in Hong Kong and won nicely. Packing Waltham and Savvy Nine were both sound in defeat and if they can produce this sort of form going forward then they should pick up a race in the short term.
