Sweet In Defeat

Happy Valley (M8) – Wednesday, 3 October 2018

Happy Valley had a track presented in GOOD condition with the running rail in the “true” or “A” position, giving a full track width of 30.5 metres.

So far this season the Happy Valley track is riding slower than has been the case in recent times. The numbers being posted here are not adjusted for the state of the track, that is, how quickly or slowly I assess it to be running. For example, most 1200m races were run around 0.5 second outside of “HKJC standard” for Meeting 8, even though the track was rated a genuine GOOD, so my final ratings will be adjusted according to my historical figures as well. However, the sectionals I post for Sweet In Defeat below will be the raw figures.

Assessing how fast a track is running across the races in a meeting, along with assessing the tempo of individual races themselves are standard contributing parts to how I shape my form and ratings for each horse.

RACE 1: C5 - 1650m
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

A decent win from Le Pegase who worked reasonably hard through the first three sections of the race to last and score back-to-back wins. He has been given a lenient five-point penalty for his success and can win again for trainer Jimmy Ting. It was an excellent run from Management Star (SID) who sustained an excellent final-600m and considering he is a lightly-raced galloper he can win in the short term.

RACE 2: C3 - 1800m
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

Namjong Plus posted the second-best final-200m (11.43) at the meeting off a decent tempo, and this was the highest rated race on the card. The on-pacers went far too hard and then compounded. Note: Faithful Trinity returned with ‘blood in the trachea’, so there were genuine excuses for our play here.

RACE 3: C4 - 1650M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

This event was run at a sedate tempo, apart from the first section and the closing fractions of the winner were also rather plain. I find it hard to see this race producing many winners. Time will tell.

RACE 4: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

The winner, Flying Force returned with ‘blood in the trachea’, so they can still win with this condition! Flying Force was a SID horse from earlier this season and he produced the best 600m and 400m (22.65) at the meeting. Whilst he wouldn’t have won, London Master was checked late in the race and kept on reasonably well. He might not be far away from a win. Apart from that, it was an average race.

RACE 5: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

Two for the Sweet In Defeat file here, Spicy Kaka and Golden Glory. The former was held-up for running room on a couple of occasions and would have gone close with even luck. Golden Glory was taken back at the start and worked home strongly. If he draws a good barrier he can map a lot closer and be a strong chance against similar competition.

RACE 6: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

The went hard in this race. It was a huge run from Beauty Loyal who missed the start 4-5 lengths and without ever being a factor, posted the second-best final-400m (22.88) at the entire meeting. He needs to jump on terms but he should be winning soon if he does.

RACE 7: C2 - 1800M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

The first half of this race was run very steady and then they picked up the tempo from the 800m which made it tough for those too far back to get into the finish. Having said that, the race rated about where it should have in the context of the night and how the track played.

RACE 8: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

California Archer set a solid tempo in front (the rider said the rail was disadvantaged) sitting two-wide… Interesting… In any case, given his early exertions it was an excellent run in defeat. He was the only on-pace runner there at the finish, and he can win a similar race in the short term. Eagle was posted on pace, three-wide without cover and was also brave, with Jolly Convergence powering home as well. This race will work out okay.
