Sweet In Defeat: Happy Valley (M51)

03.03.2021

Happy Valley had a turf track presented in GOOD condition with the running rail set in the “A” or “true” position.

The track played on the slow side so adjustments were made. Winners came from 0 to 7 lengths from the leader, 2nd through 9th position in running and 1-5 wide around the bend, with a premium on being 2+ wide. Lanes 4-21 were used in the home straight and the inside was not the place to be there.

RACE 1: C5 - 1650m
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

The pace was decent through the first half of this race and it set it up for the closers. The race overall only rated okay, but a conservative ride on All Best Friends paid dividends. Tailor Made had his chance and ran well enough. Fairy Floss did a power of work through the early stages and was very good all things considered.

RACE 2: C4 - 1650m
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

The pace was good in this event and it rated about where it should. There wasn’t much to note, with the exception of Run Run Good who posted a 2nd-best final-200m (11.72) from the race. He was shuffled back at a key stage but kept on well. He is on the brink of a drop in grade and when he gets that drop in class can be followed. Savvy Kingman was wide without cover throughout and this was clearly his best run to date. Nunchuks was a convincing winner off an ideal trip.

RACE 3: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

The pace was good and it was a nice ride here from Purton on Wood On Fire who overcame a wide gate. Mission Smart (SID) was a touch unlucky after being held up at a key stage and he is close to a win, if he can hold this form. Mercurial is looking for further and Sunny Baby was only having his second start but hit the line well and might be one to consider from a better barrier.

RACE 4: C4 - 1800M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

The pace set was solid in this one, so in fairness, it a very good win by Dynamic Eagle who has been racing well for some time. As many of these will line up over a trip again, both Donc Je Suis and Methane should pick up a race in the near future. Overall, I expect the form will work out pretty well out of this race.

RACE 5: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

This looked a pretty average race on paper, and it pretty much worked out that way. The pace was solid, so the effort of Hurry Hurry Gain was good given this was only his second career start and he is open to more improvement, but the chasers were pretty plain. He might be one to stick with, and can handle a class rise following his 10-point penalty but I’m not overly thrilled with anything else.

RACE 6: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

I liked this win from Ever Force, who carried top weight and was close enough to inferior ground on the inside, but was very brave in the run to the line. Spontaneous had his chance and ran well enough, but the first two each look nice progressive types. Ever Force should be followed up in grade and I expect that he will win at least a couple more races in the short term.

RACE 7: C3 - 1650M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

The pace was very strong here, so it set up perfecty for the eventual winner Wealthy Delight, who sat back and ran over the top of his rivals. Royal Bomb was very good given he was close to that solid tempo and still fought out the finish, and he makes the SID file. I expect that the form will stack up quite well out of this race.

RACE 8: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

The pace picked up from the 800m, with Triple Triple and Inner Flame duelling on the lead. It didn’t help either horse. Wind N Grass is well exposed but Zac Purton from a good barrier were both positives and it was a well-timed run and soft win in the end. I’m not sure how strong the form will be as a whole, out of this race.

RACE 9: C3 - 1650M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

The pace was pretty sedate and it picked up from the 800m, suiting Farshad. I doubt that he will get similar circumstances again. Savaquin was excellent under the weight and with the pace against him, while Sunny Star was pretty good. Piano Solo and Gift Of Lifeline both ran on well from back in the field with the pace against them.
