Happy Valley (M50) – Wednesday, 27 February 2019

Happy Valley had a track presented in GOOD condition for race 1 before being upgraded to GOOD TO FIRM for the remainder of the card. The running rail was in the outermost “C+3” position.

RACE 1: C5 - 1650m
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

A brutal tempo was set here and this race rated very well, as you would expect being 1.66 seconds inside of standard (although not that much after adjustments). The form should stack up well enough. Lucky Storm (SID) was close enough to that tempo and deserves some credit and in a similar race with less pressure he should go well.

RACE 2: C4 - 1800m
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

This was very much a race of two halves. They ran very slowly through the first 600m and quick the next 800m and two lengths covered nine of the 10 runners. It was the worst rated race on the card, in a clumped finish and I would be weary of the form out of the race.

RACE 3: C4 - 1000M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

When Mr Right is running almost half a second inside of standard over 1000m you know the track is running fast. Oriental Elite (SID) was first up and posted the 6th best final 200m (11.25) at the meeting, he should strip fitter and can win a similar race in this distance range in the short term.

RACE 4: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

This race rated okay for the grade and they weren’t going to catch Wah May Princess with such a soft lead. I don’t know why Everbrave handed up once attaining the lead but it proved costly. Nice Kick was excellent all things considered, but I don’t want to make him a SID entry, but on a true tempo he can win over the course and distance.  The Show was equally good.

RACE 5: C4 - 1650M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

The pace was slow and it should have played in to the hands of those close to the lead. Overall, the race didn’t rate anything special and I won’t be reading too much in to the form out of this race.

RACE 6: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

A pretty solid tempo was set throughout. Fantastic Eight (SID) produced the second-best final-400m (22.29) at the meeting and given the race-shape, his effort was sound. He improved ridden with a touch more patience and this was his best effort for a while.

RACE 7: C3 - 1650M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

The early pace was solid, they stacked up around the bend and came home quite well, which is a perfect race shape for the winner Brave Legend. Ping Hai Treasure was asked a bit much of in the scheme of things, and I’m happy enough to give him due respect considering he was close enough to that tempo on his last outing.

RACE 8: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

Lady First (SID) makes the file, he was terrific. He sustained a race-best final-600m from back in the field, but 1200m around Happy Valley isn’t really his go, especially from the outside alley. He looks ready to win out of a race that rated about where it should for the grade.
