Happy Valley (M48) – Wednesday, 20 February 2019

Happy Valley had a track rated as GOOD for the first three races before being upgraded to GOOD to FIRM. The running rail at the outermost “C” position. The times were very fast overall, which makes for somewhat of a challenge assessing the form, however, I have adjusted my ratings accordingly with enough gallopers well-exposed ability to use as benchmarks.

RACE 1: C5 - 1200m
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

The Happy Valley track raced very fast, evidenced by the time here that was 0.53 seconds inside of standard, but after my adjustments it was about on benchmark. The usual suspects lined up and I’m not sure there is much to take from the race.

RACE 2: C5 - 1800m
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

A soft first two sections were set here and then the pace steadily built in a lovely front running ride on Come On Wongchoy. We know the horse isn’t that good overall, so once again, the fast track and race shape helped him. Overall, this was the worst race of the night and I’m not sure how strong the form will be out of it.

RACE 3: C4 - 1400M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

A relatively steady tempo was set here and the first three home were amongst the first four horses in the running. The pattern played against Le Terroir (SID) and he posted the eighth-best final-400m (22.65) on the night and he should be getting close to a win, but overall the race didn’t rate as anything special.

RACE 4: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD to FIRM

This race was run almost a second inside of standard, but as stated earlier, the track was fast, still though, this race rated well. The winner Champion’s Way is a talented galloper to carry 60.5kg and win like he did. He will be hard to beat up in grade with a lighter weight. Little Wise Man (SID) was making his debut, was unwanted in the market ($38) and makes our file – top run. He posted the equal sixth-best final-200m (11.52) at the meeting and is still learning his craft. He will be winning sooner rather than later.

RACE 5: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD to FIRM

Every now and again there is a race you simply can’t work out and for me this fits in to that category. Speed Vision busted open the clock and nearly broke the track record when winning. How is this possible? My advice is wait and see how the form out of this race works out before getting too bogged down in the performance as I have grave concerns over how well this race rated.

RACE 6: C4 - 1650M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD to FIRM

On official times this was run over a second inside of standard but it didn’t rate as well after adjustments. Naboo Star clearly should have won but for being awkwardly placed and Cinquante Cinq was given a shocking ride. He’s already on our list and stays there. Considering Universal Go Go was three wide without cover for the entire trip, he ran quite well too.

RACE 7: C3 - 1000M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD to FIRM

Another sprint race that was run in fast time and where the leader, Little Bird made all. Goko will be better suited back at Sha Tin and there was some merit to his effort. However, once again, the track pattern may have flattered a few in this race.

RACE 8: C3 - 1650M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD to FIRM

Even after adjustments, the pace was furious in this one. Arcada settled on-speed and had the pattern in his favour and the tempo against him. All the same, he will go well again if entered in this grade over the course and distance and the form should work out well enough.
