Sweet In Defeat

Happy Valley (M46) – Wednesday, 13 February 2019

By Hutchi

Happy Valley had a track presented in GOOD condition with the running rail at the  “B” position.

RACE 1: C4 - 1000m
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

A good tempo was set here and overall the race rated quite well for the grade. Gift Of Lifleine ($58) was having his third career start and posted the best final-200m (11.28) at the meeting. He makes the SID file and is progressing nicely. Outside of him, there wasn’t a heap to take note of.

RACE 2: C5 - 1650m
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

This was a muddling-run race where Golden Cannon clearly should have won. Overall, the race rated the worst of the night which isn’t a massive surprise given it was a Class 5. Most of these will line up against one another again and it will be someone’s else turn next time.

RACE 3: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

The pace was solid here, but the track was playing to suit those on-pace/on-rail as it was racing fast and Wah May Princess actually held on to win! The event rated quite well. Gracious Ryder seemed to have his chance and I’m not sure how genuine he is? I’m not going to take too much out of this race and I’ll be carful giving too much credit to the winner and others.

RACE 4: C4 - 1650M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

The pace was solid especially through the midddle sections, but they laboured home and this race didn’t rate anything special (taking in to account the fast conditions). All that said, some credit goes to the winner Happy Warrior as he was pressued passing the rock and probably would have won more easily had he not been eyeballed a long way from home.

RACE 5: C3 - 1800M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

This race rated well, a good to fast tempo and although they steadied from the 800m to 400m, they sprinted well over the final stages. Harmony Hero (SID) was tackling Happy Valley for the first time and ran well. He will find a similar race there and prove hard to beat.

RACE 6: C1 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

This race rated about where it should for the class and it was a really good win to Wishful Thinker. He isn’t far off that top bracket of Hong Kong sprinters. With three-lengths covering nine of the 10 runners though, it’s hard to see anything in flashing lights going forward.

RACE 7: C1 - 1650M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

On a fast track, with the pattern in his favour, Circuit Glory made every post a winner. Normally off those sections he wouldn’t be able to lead all the way. Obviously this was the best rating race of the night too. Dare I say it, Turin Redstar, who was three-wide without cover throughout was enormous… he has been butchered so many times this season it’s frankly becoming ridiculous. He will win soon if he hasn’t been completely busted-up by what has transpired this season.

RACE 8: C3 - 1650M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

This was run just on standard for the class and given the track conditions it didn’t rate anything special. Given the race-shape, Nordic Warrior was excellent albeit on the best part of the track and posted the fifth-best final-200m (11.56) at the meeting. He makes the SID file and I’m happy to follow him in the short term.

RACE 9: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

It was a solid win to Music Addition who had the pattern in his favour. He is a talent though and looks a nice progressive sprinter. Tornado Twist obviously isn’t as suited to Happy Valley and can bounce back. Sumstreetsumwhere (SID) closed well against the pattern and was very good overall. He can be followed.
