Sweet In Defeat

Happy Valley (M36) – Wednesday, 9 January 2019

By Hutchi

Happy Valley had a track presented in GOOD condition with the running rail in the ‘true’ “A” position.

RACE 1: C5 - 1650m
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

A fast pace was set in this event and the race rated quite good for a Class 5 mile. I expect the form to hold up well-enough and Golden Cannon (SID) is really knocking on the door for a win. He has been more than a touch unlucky lately and his final-400m (23.64) was clearly a race-best.

RACE 2: C4 - 1000m
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

This was the worst race of the night, they went out in relatively even to slow tempo and came home slower. That said, Lightning Treasure began awkwardly and produced a terrific finish (22.92 final-400m with was the eighth-best of the meeting). He would be the only one to follow out of the event.

RACE 3: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

The pace was quick and it set up nicely for a backmarker, with first and second coming from last and second last at the 400m mark. In the end it was a soft win by Super Lucky. There were no real excuses for Split Of A Second. It was a better run from Mischievous Sundae (SID) at career start number three. When balanced and clear inside the final-200m (11.28 eighth-best at meeting) he ran on well and if he ventures back there he will be hard to beat.

RACE 4: C3 - 1000M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

It was a soft lead for Special Stars and he just hung on. The race rated okay, but his final-200m (11.61) was ranked 10th in the race which is a concern. There was no market support for Shining Gem (SID) ($97) but he closed with the best-400m and 200m of the meeting. Considering this was his second local start, the former Australian galloper might be one to keep safe next time.

RACE 5: C4 - 1650M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

There wasn’t much pace in this one, so it was a little surprising that the final sectional was as slow as it was and the overall race rating wasn’t good at all. Happy Warrior ran well below his previous rating in defeat and seemed to have every possible chance. Is he still learning his craft? Charity Grand closed well at his second-up run this term and he should be ready next time.

RACE 6: GROUP 3 - 1800M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

The best race of the night and it clearly delivered the best rating as well. That said, it was a handicap and the winner Simply Brilliant was sound and very brave given his proximity to the fast tempo. However, Citron Spirit was given a poor ride over the final-500m and clearly should have won. Off a fast pace, he still produced the fifth-best final-200m (11.21) on the card. Time Warp was huge with top weight, this performance was better than his HKIR run in December – he shouldn’t be underestimated at his next start.

RACE 7: C3 - 1650M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

This race rated just fair for this grade. There really was not much to see either, with Har Har Heart making a move due to the slow tempo and it was the right move. Racing Luck got a dream run through and was too good, but not much else to report.

RACE 8: C2 - 1200M
Course: TURF "A"     Going: GOOD

This was the second-best race on the card. Super Turbo (11.20 final-200m ranked fourth at meeting) hit the line very well after being allowed to drift back in the early stages. It’s not unusual for him though, but he seems in good form and should he draw a barrier that enables him to settle a touch closer then he might be close to another win.The winner, Country Star, produced a very similar figure when he was second to Regency Legend.
