Sweet In Defeat

Happy Valley (M32) – Wednesday, 26 December 2018

Happy Valley had a track presented in GOOD condition with the running rail at the “C+3” position.

RACE 1: C4 - 1650m
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

This race rated on par with a C3 event. Starlit Knight produced similar figures when winning in October over the same course and distance. He just might be competitive up in grade with a light weight. There wasn’t else much to note.

RACE 2: C4 - 1650m
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

One for the SID file here with Happy Warrior, who simply should have won. He was caught in traffic at a vital stage and then rallied (11.94 race-best 200m) to be closest on the line. He will meet similar opposition next time and prove hard to beat and once again, this race rated well enough to win a standard C3 event. Note: Super Euro Star was found to be lame the next day.

RACE 3: C5 - 1800M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

The tempo was good enough through the first half of this event, pretty close to standard. However, the race didn’t rate very well and overall was just standard for the grade. Come On Wongchoy is holding his form well, will probably strike similar opposition and is close to a win. Lucky Shiny Day was excellent in defeat, going back from a wide draw. He can make the SID file as he should win a C5 in the short term.

RACE 4: C4 - 1000M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

This was the worst race of the night, where the tempo was relatively steady. Special Stars (22.76 seventh-best 400m) didn’t get the pace required and was awkwardly placed in amongst runners. He will be far more effective up in grade with a light weight and probably over 1,200m.

RACE 5: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

The pace was solid here but on the “C+3” course, the leader’s back is often a nice spot. Super Leader (SID) closed well and makes the file as his first-up run for the stable had merit. He might be looking for the mile, along with Champion Supreme who looks destined to win a race in the short term.

RACE 6: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

This race was slowly run and consequently, those who raced on-pace dominated with horses one-two in the running being the first two home. That made it almost impossible for Waldorf who once again closed particularly well (11.31 meeting-best final-200m) and he can win again with a more genuine tempo. Overall, the race rated just okay.

RACE 7: C3 - 1650M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

A solid speed throughout and the two best horses in this event ran the quinella. Happy Dragon won very nicely and he deserved the win following a string of unlucky runs. As for Bank On Red, it probably wasn’t one of Moreira’s best rides, but the horse only received a one point penalty for the second and should be winning soon. The speed was genuine enough so I’m not sure why Top Laurels took off when he did… another head-scratcher. However, this was the best rating race of the night.

RACE 8: C2 - 1650M
Course: TURF "C+3"     Going: GOOD

The early pace was solid enough and with the field bunching between the 800-400m, those settling midfield were best placed. Winning Faith (SID) makes the file here with an excellent finish (11.45 final-200m sixth-best of the meeting). He produced a great finish, basically being first up after two months and interestingly, he struck form around this time last season when winning three-in-a-row.
