Sweet In Defeat

Happy Valley (M20) – Wednesday, 14 November 2018

Happy Valley had a track presented in GOOD condition with the running rail hitting the “C” spot.

RACE 1: C5 - 1650m
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

A very sedate first 850m and the overall race shape played against Management Star who posted 12th-best final-200m (11.56) at the meeting. He is ready to win. Given the soft run those had on-pace, there isnt much else to take from this event.

RACE 2: C5 - 1200m
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

Quite a solid tempo was set through the first two sections of this race, but overall the event didn’t rate anything special. Happy Happy made some late headway and leaves the impression he might be suited with a move up to a mile, but I wouldn’t be relying too heavily on this event.

RACE 3: C4 - 1000M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

This race didn’t rate very well and visually it was a strange win from Gentle Breeze who seemed to be at his top the whole way, but actually posted the best closing sections of the race. He might be better suited to 1200m. Look Eras was first-up and considering he won deeper (fourth-up) into his prep last season he might be one to take from the race, but he would need to strike similar opposition.

RACE 4: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

An even tempo was set in this event but those on-pace should have been suited and the race overall did not rate very well. Looking Good posted some excellent closing splits (11.39 third-best last-200m at the meeting) with the blinkers applied for the first time. Champion Supreme may have had a post race issue and deserves another chance.

RACE 5: C4 - 1650M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

This race was run in a slow first sectional but then they steadily built up the tempo and overall, it was a decent race as far as it rated. Happy Rocky was excellent considering the lack of early pace and actually posted the best final-200m (11.34) at the entire meeting. He makes the SID file but it just depends where he goes for his next assignment.

RACE 6: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

Note: Cerefino and Daring Fit were both found to be lame next day. This race was on-pace dominated but the first two past the post went relatively quickly and perhaps those chasing were just too far back. Flash Famous got going late and perhaps after one more loss, and effectively a drop in grade, he might be one to follow over a mile. Super Leader can race in C4 and he makes the SID file.

RACE 7: C3 - 1800M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

A muddling tempo was set in this event, it was very slowly run through the middle stages, which led to mid-race moves and interference. I would be sticking with Bigwood who arguably should have won, but all-in-all, it’s difficult to read this race with much confidence given the stop-start nature of the event.

RACE 8: C2 - 1650M
Course: TURF "C"     Going: GOOD

The pace was solid throughout this event and this was by far and away the highest rating race on the card. Volpino (11.56 12th-best last-200m of the meeting) closed well off a strong tempo and considering this was his third local start, he looks promising. In addition, one more run and he is eligible for a drop in grade. So we will make him a SID with a three runs exemption.
