Sweet In Defeat

Happy Valley (M10) – Wednesday, 10 October 2018

Happy Valley had a track presented in GOOD condition with the running rail in the “B” position. The track continues to play slower than historical standard.

RACE 1: C4 - 1800m
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

A very slow lead speed was set in this event by Po Ching Treasure who was in front from start to finish. Savannah Wind put in a another very good run in defeat and posted the second-best final-200m (11.72) at the meeting off a slow tempo. He is ready to win and makes the SID file and would relish a move to 2200m at the city circuit.

RACE 2: C5 - 1200m
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

They ran a relatively slow 800-400m in this event, and ultimately the settling position was critical. The race overall did not rate as anything special and I’m not sure that the form will stack up strongly out of it.

RACE 3: C4 - 1650M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

Another race with a pedsetrian tempo. All You Know took a while to balance-up but hit the line very well (11.74) with the fourth-best final-200m, with the winner Ultimate Dream clocking the fourth-best final-400m (22.67). The race overall rated rather ordinarily with sedate fractions through the first 1200m.

RACE 4: C4 - 1000M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

The first 400m of this race was quite solidly run, so it was a sound win to Lunar Zephyr who box-seated and fell in. Victory Power and Roman Odyssey kept on well enough from back in the field. Roman Odyssey posted an excellent final-400m (22.84 eighth-best of the meeting) and is one for the SID file and 1200m would be his optimum target at his next outing.

RACE 5: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

They went at a solid enough tempo through the first and second sections here and it was a brave win to Blitzing. He was empty late but arguably was entitled to be, while Applause had the right run and speed to suit. The winner seems well-treated in the handicap with a five-point penalty and can therefore win again.

RACE 6: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

This was obviously a messy race with some significant interference. The pace was solid for the first-800m which makes the run of Victory Machine very good indeed. He makes the SID file along with Jade Theatre who has had excuses his last two runs and is close to a win.

RACE 7: C2 - 1000M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

The pace was even in this one, so from that point of view, it was an excellent run from Fantastic Eight who was three-wide at the tail and rattled home in a meeting-best-400m (22.38). He is on the brink of a drop in grade, but based on this run, he might be able to win one a race before that happens. In addition he might be better ridden with a touch of patience too. Hinchinlove was excellent in his first Hong Kong start and one would think there is plenty of improvement to come.

RACE 8: C3 - 1650M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

This was the best rating race of the night, and it was some peformance from Planet Star who worked hard through the first 1200m. He was first-up on a fast tempo and was only nabbed late. He makes the SID file and I’d like to see him back over this course and distance. It was a much-improved run from Arcada, but I would like to see him one more time before getting too stuck in, in saying that it depends on what he meets next.
