Sweet In Defeat

Sha Tin (M2) – Wednesday, 5 September 2018

There was fair volume of rain before the raceday began and also some showers leading into race 1, but the track going was GOOD to FIRM. The overall times were slower than standard more or less across the board – an interesting phenomenon given this was the first meeting at Happy Valley for the season.

RACE 1: C5 - 1650m
Course: Turf "B"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

The winner Le Pegase is the only runner worth following from this race. After working early he was tough in the run to the line and may have improved for his new trainer.

RACE 2: C5 - 1200m
Course: Turf "B"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

A lovely ride got Noble De Boy home, but the track condition and lack of oppositiion probably helped his cause.

RACE 3: C4 - 1000M
Course: Turf "B"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

Once again, another race where the time was markedly outside of standard. However, clearly one to follow here is Country Star, who was badly checked at the 250m mark and may have won had that been the case.

RACE 4: C4 - 1200M
Course: Turf "B"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

An on-pace dominated race so from that point of view, Flying Force who closed with a race best 23.26 final 400m was quite good in defeat. This was his first run for Danny Shum.

RACE 5: C4 - 1650M
Course: Turf "B"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

Nothing of any significance to report from this race for the future.

RACE 6: C3 - 1200M
Course: Turf "B"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

The form should work out well from this race. Red Warrior was excellent, closing strongly after settling three-wide without cover. Jumbo Happiness will strip fitter and probably got shuffled back a little further than was ideal. On the clock, it rated one of the better 1200m races on the card.

RACE 7: C3 - 1650M
Course: Turf "B"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

A furious tempo set up well for Sky Melody to win nicely. This race will rate well, but he needed the strong pace. From that point of view, Land Grant was quite good in defeat.

RACE 8: C2 - 1200M
Course: Turf "B"     Going: GOOD TO FIRM

The first two home Super Hoppy and Fortune Booth were solid performances, but nothing major learned here outside of them.
