Sweet In Defeat: Happy Valley (M02)

09.09.2020

Happy Valley had a turf track presented in GOOD condition with the running rail set in the “B” position.

The times on the night played close to standard and the track was fair. During the running, most winners were on the fence or one off. In the straight, we had winners from lanes 2 through 10. I saw no evidence of any pattern.

RACE 1: C5 - 1000m
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

This rated the worst race on the card. They never really went quick at any stage. Wins All had a stable change, a perfect run and won nicely, but the times suggested it was nothing special. Aurora Steed was a victim of the barrier but hit the line very well and can be upgraded on this effort.

RACE 2: C4 - 1650m
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

This was literally a race of two halves. They ran 1.1 seconds outside of standard for the first half and a similar amount inside gifted the eventual winner Faithful Trinity the race. The horse clearly improved on recent efforts for the new stable. He received 6-points for the win so will be competitive again in the grade. But Charity Grand was a play and he makes the SID file. His 22.63 was the 2nd-best final-400m at the meeting and he should find a win in the short-term. Electric Lightning was building quite well and delivered a better run than it might’ve look on the face of things.

RACE 3: C4 - 1000M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

This race rated about where it should for a Class 4 over 1000m. The tempo was sound and perhaps Nextmodel needed the run or felt the weight late. There were no excuses for G Unit unless you queried his fitness also, but on face value he had his chance. Nextmodel will go up in grade and drop in weight, which might help his cause with the benefit of the run, but he does need to improve.

RACE 4: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

This race rated okay, once again, about on standard for the grade. The tempo picked up mid-race and winner Harmony N Home had a dream run. The winner was good given the weight, and with an 8-point penalty, will rise in grade next time. Harmony N Home will need to improve again, but with a similar run up in class he will be competitive. The Abraxas (SID) dropped a point and that make shim eligible for Class 5. He makes the file and will be very competitive over the course and distance in that grade, with a senior rider, with the caveat being when he is in Class 5.

RACE 5: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

For a Class 4 this race rated okay. Power King was one of our main plays and was clearly a great bet delivering a super run, but unfortunately without much luck. He was posted three-wide with no cover and his effort given the pace of the 1st two sectionals was tremendous. He makes the SID file and he looks the type that with a light weight he could be very competitive up in grade. Jazz Steed got his “tongue over the bit” so had excuses. Melbourne Hall was given an absolute peach and produced the 3rd-best final-200m (11.24) at the meeting which was solid, but this was many lengths better than what he had done before… was Purton a major factor? He delivered a perfect ride!

RACE 6: C3 - 1650M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

This was the best race on the night. It was a solid front-running ride on Alpha Hedge and he was too good. We made Lightning Steed our main play believing he would lead and that made a difference, BUT he was no match for the winner and he didn’t have too many excuses. The race shape suited those on-pace, basically the first-four in the running were the first-four home. From that perspective, Namjong Plus (SID) was very good. He has won second-up, will strip fitter and will need a race with some pace (1800m preferred distance) but he is worth following. Overall, I think the form will stack up well out of this race.

RACE 7: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

Note: Little Bird pulled up lame after race. This was one of the better races on the card. Triple Triple was given very little chance with the amount of work he did in the early stages. Hardly Swears had a good run but was sound in defeat, and he should pick up a race soon enough. California Levee didn’t get a drop in grade for his 5th, but is on the brink and when the drop comes will be worth following.

RACE 8: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

This race rated about where it should. Fantasy was well backed $3.90 to $2.90 but never travelled and was reported to have made a “breathing noise” through out. That’s a worry for wouldbe backers of Fantasy going forward. Winning Endeavour was a play and delivered a great run, off a solid tempo and produced the second-best final-200m (11.22) at the meeting. He makes the SID file and when he goes to a mile he will be hard to beat. Guy Dragon was good and given a peach of a ride as well. Wealthy Delight was getting warm late and First Responder (SID) was one of the runs of the night. He was entitled to peak on his run. Cantstopthefeeling did plenty of work to lead and he too can be followed.
