Happy Valley IJC Night (M26) – Wednesday, 5 December 2018

Happy Valley had a track presented in GOOD condition with the running rail at the “B” position for International Jockey Championship (IJC) Night.

RACE 1: C5 - 1650m
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

A brutal tempo was set early and perennial non-winner The Sylph had the race run to suit him and finally won again. The Joy Of Giving arguably should have won and is close to getting success but we have highlighted him in the past. Gobi Storm (SID) considering that tempo, was very, very good and can make the list. He just needs a race where he can dictate and not get so pressured.

RACE 2: C5 - 1200m
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

A slow pace was set here and one-two in the running were first and second home. It was an event of little change given the sedate tempo and overall the race was clearly the worst of the night. As a consequence, it’s hard to take much out of this one.

RACE 3: C4 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

Just an even tempo in this one which upgrades the win of Split Of A Second who posted the best final-400m (22.35) at the meeting. The race rated okay, but his winning performance was very good. Naboo Star (SID) who missed the start, ran the fastest final-200m at the meeting (10.96) and although he might need a run or two to sort his manners, he clearly has ability and might fly under the radar to an extent.

RACE 4: C4 - 1000M (IJC 1st Leg)
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

A genuine tempo was set in this event and a promising galloper Special Stars was the winner. He looks progressive and appears the type to string some wins together. Godspeed ran surprisingly well over a trip short of his best and considering it was just his third run this term, he could be one to keep safe over further next time. (He is also on the brink of a drop in grade and would be too good for C5).

RACE 5: C4 - 1650M (IJC 2nd Leg)
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

This was the second-best race of the night in overall rating. Glory Star ran to within a length of what he did first up this term and this galloper has improved out of sight for Jimmy Ting. Incredibly, he was issued a 7-point penalty for that win, which is a dead set gift and he can win next time and probably a couple more. Swot Windicator was 137-1, closed with the best final-200m of the race (11.54) and hinted there is a race in him. He makes the SID file as he could be a great value play when he next competes.

RACE 6: C3 - 1200M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

A good-to-even tempo was set here and it was a solid enough win to Country Star who had the run of the race. He might find it a little tougher in the short term. The wide gate and the early use of energy for Just Not Listening proved costly but he can be competitive at Happy Valley as this race rated okay. However, not a lot to take out of it.

RACE 7: C4 - 1650M (IJC 3rd Leg)
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

This race was run at a muddling tempo here, very quick through the first half, then a big anchor drop and all-in-all a messy race. Overall the race rated quite well due to the fast first half, but they were like the walking wounded inside the final-400m. From that perspective Curling Luxury was quite good in defeat but I have my reservations about this event.

RACE 8: C3 - 1650M (IJC 4th Leg)
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

Once again an IJC race that was a strange watch and on the clock it was fast/very slow/fast. Bank On Red (SID) couldn’t win from the position he was in turning for home, so his run was enormous. He posted the fifth-best final-200m (11.14) on a night where there were four sprint races…..some effort. He should be hard to beat next time.

RACE 9: C2 - 1800M
Course: TURF "B"     Going: GOOD

As expected this rated the best event of the night and arguably the form horses ran one-two. Around three lengths covered the first six home so whilst a lot of these will line up against each other again, there wasn’t any run of any real significance.
