This is an interesting race on the all-weather track (AWT). PRINCE OF GEMS looks a progressive sort of galloper and he had clear excuses on his last outing when a beaten odds-on favourite. He attempts this surface for the first time, which is somewhat of an unknown and even though he looks to have upside and is a leading chance, carrying 60.5kg won’t make it an easy task. I like the manner in which STAR LUCK has moved in his work and trials and he looks well-prepared ahead of his debut. However, he might have to work a touch too much from the outside gate as well. Nonetheless, he seems the type from the Frankie Lor stable that could win on debut and a horse that has some promise. TOM’S DRAGON is a contender. There was nothing wrong his latest effort on a sloppy dirt track last time when he was third behind a couple of decent gallopers and he might be even better on a normal, ‘good’ surface. If the less-exposed and more fancied runners have any chinks in their armour then he should be there to expose them. FORTUNE HAPPINESS comes through the same form line (race 484) as Tom’s Dragon and if he finds some improvement can finish closer. SHAMPORT was beaten on his merits last time at Happy Valley, but he might find this easier, but will 1200m on the dirt be too sharp for him? It might be worth a small speck on the first starter Star Luck, he’ll need some of what his name suggests, but appears to have enough ability to win a Class 4. That said I don’t mind a quinella with my top-three selections.
