The two main chances in this event according to how I’ve assessed this race are WHAT ELSE BUT YOU and RISE HIGH, with good cases to be made for SIMPLY BRILLIANT and GOOD STANDING. What Else But You deserves to be favourite based on his win in the Chinese New Year Cup when he posted the best final-600m (33.40) at the meeting. To me he is a class act and he leaves the impression he will be even better over a mile. The recent trial of Rise High suggested he is close to a win and he will strip fitter for his run at Happy Valley where he carried top weight. He drops 6.5kg for this afternoon and should be powering home if he can sit in a relaxed fashion with cover off the speed. SIMPLY BRILLIANT has been tough all season and a model of consistency; although dropping back from 2,000m may not be ideal he’ll be rock hard fit. I can’t help but think he’s too short in the market though, so I’m effectively against him today. GOOD STANDING gets in well-weighted and is holding his form well, he also maps to get the right run during the event. This is a quality race.
