There are eight Hong Kong Derby aspirants line up here in what should prove to be a most interesting event. John Size’s WAIKUKU and ENRICHMENT lead the charge, with the former stepping up to 1,800m for the first time. The outside gate and top weight will not make it easy for Waikuku and which might mean they ride him quietly, but he will still be hard to beat here and in the Derby itself. Enrichment posted a solid win over SAVVY SIX last time (Race 407) and with a 3kg swing in favour of Savvy Six this time things should even themselves up somewhat. In addition, CHARITY GO from that race sat close enough to a solid tempo during the running and could easily turn it around on that pair. He looks like he’ll be an excellent price and a horse one could have a small outlay on at tidy overs. MONGOLIAN KING might be able to knock them all off. He powered home behind Good Standing last time posting some excellent closing splits (22.66 race-best final-400m) and I like him up to 1800m, with the blinkers removed. This will be more open than the betting on Waikuku suggests. I like that horse a lot and don’t want to sell to oppose him as such, but it’s worth having a small each way outlay on Charity Go, with an emphasis on backing him to place.
