R10 THE MERLION HANDICAP

summary

Progressive galloper RIGHT CHOICE will be hard to beat again and can make it four wins from five career starts by taking out the last race of the day. He will have to carry 5kg more than his last start win, which is a fair impost, and he has drawn the outside gate, but there isn’t much speed in the event and he might be able to work across and sit close to the lead quite easily. UNCLE STEVE finished fourth to Right Choice last time, meets him better at the weights, is better drawn and will strip fitter, so it is easy to make a case for him. COOL TEAM has only had two local starts and on both occasions has shown nice promise. He should appreciate coming up in distance and with natural improvement, he can figure. I expect that he’ll deliver a Hong Kong career-best run. Of the remainder, ROUNDABOUT simply flew home last start over this course and distance, in the process producing a very good final-400m (22.15-meeting best). I like the booking of Moreira and he can run well. From barrier 4 he could settle a pair or two closer than normal, but his lack of early speed always leaves him more vulnerable to tempo and luck than others, hence his 3/39 winning record.

There isn’t much pace on paper here and RIGHT CHOICE can sit close to the lead, which might be SMART LEADER. IRISH VEGA can be ridden positively from UNCLE STEVE, who is drawn far better than his debut.
