The second local start from SHINING GEM caught the eye when he posted the best final-400m (22.49) at the meeting on January 9. He should appreciate the step up in 1,200m and whilst he will need a touch of luck from the barrier, he looks like a play. There is also an interesting newcomer from New Zealand in Joyful Union (ex. Boss). This is not an overly strong Class 3 contest and this fellow has been to Happy Valley for a nice trial and seems to have struck a race that he can win on debut. That said, it is never an easy task for that to happen. BUOYANT BOY has been holding his form well and should get a nice run from the barrier. LOVING A BOOM has also shown some potential but this will be his first run around the tight circuit. He’s come up short enough and the market seems to have placed a lot of stock in his second to Tornado Twist. Whilst it reads well, I didn’t rate it as highly as others by the looks. DOUBLE VALENTINE was quite good on his last start on the all-weather track and is on the brink of a drop in grade, so that must be considered, but he is well-handicapped and he can fill a minor spot.
