The likely short-priced favourite CHAMPION’S WAY will be very hard to beat. His debut win rated highly, he is well drawn again and as is the case with John Size-trained horses, should be better for the experience. I expect him to win and don’t really want to play against him, even though he will probably come up shorter than he should. At the end of the day, his debut win was on par with the highly rated Country Star who won on the same meeting, and it would be more inexperience than talent that is cause for concern for would-be backers of Champion’s Way. Earlier this season, SHINING ON defeated KHAKI over the course and distance in a race that rated pretty well and each has had excuses in subsequent runs. The draw is of major benefit to Khaki and I expect the apprentice to be asked to “use it” and sit in a forward spot, from where he will be competitive. Another horse that merits respect is GOUTEN OF GARO, who is seemingly something of a non-winner, but does have form around the favourite and he has the blinkers applied for the first time. This might be the gear addition that could help spark him to run through the line. Champion’s Way is the best win chance, but I don’t want to take odds-on. A conservative strategy is a small unit quinella with Khaki and Shining On.
