summary

It isn’t easy to bet into this event with WAIKUKU being a short-priced favourite and he looks like extending his winning streak. I am expecting that he will come up shorter in the market than he should however, although he is clearly the best winning chance here and a likely major player in the Hong Kong Derby based on his performance ratings so far. All that said GOOD STANDING could make a race of it. He was excellent when defeating subsequent winner Enrichment and there was no fluke about that win. Good Standing has been costly to us in the past with his inability to back-up from one run to the next, so that’s a concern along with the drop back to the 1400m. KING OPIE has won three of his last four starts and this on-pacer drops 5kg in weight with the rise in grade. He has a couple of lengths to find on the best chance, but the weight relief will certainly help. STAR SHINE is definitely in the mix. He was excellent when resuming after a prolonged absence three weeks ago and the gap between runs should have him competitive today with the improvement in fitness.

There isn’t much pace on paper here with KING OPIE the likely leader from WAIKUKU and GOOD STANDING. Those back in the field might choose to make an early sprint, but if the first three land as expected any move is likely to be futile.
