For me the standout horse to win the Chinese New Year Cup is WHAT ELSE BUT YOU. Against MORETHANLUCKY and CALIFORNIA WHIP he was excellent when fourth behind Conte (Race 309), posting a race-best final-200m (11.20) albeit with 6.5kg less than he will carry this time. This looks a good race for him on the back of a solid run in The Chinese Club Challenge Cup and the smaller field should mean he isn’t conceding too much ground when the sprint goes on. Morethanlucky was good in the same event and it is easy to make a case for him again. He will likely have positional advantage over What Else But You. Of the others, SOLAR PATCH promotes interest. He is first up, so there should be improvement to come, but his final outing last term rated well-enough to win a handicap of this calibre and with a light weight he could run a big race. Overall though, What Else But You is the win outlay option here.
