RACE 5

2 SOLAR WAI WAI (rp $2.00)

WIN (10 units)

I assessed the debut performance of SOLAR WAI WAI as having a lot more merit than maybe others might. His effort to battle for second following sustaining a decent amount of pressure on the lead was good and with some natural improvement he can go on and break through today.

Result: 1st @ $2.05 best corporate (+10.5 units)

NEXT BEST OUTLAYS

RACE 4

4 HAPPY ALUMNI (rp – $3.70)

WIN (4.5 units)

HAPPY ALUMNI didn’t get all favours on debut and after being slowly away he was excellent late in the race. If he can jump better and make use of barrier 3 then I have no doubt he is the horse to beat in what is a thin Class 4 contest. He should be able to secure positional advantage on main rival High Rev.

Result: 2nd (-4.5 units)

RACE 6

3 SPLENDOUR AND GOLD (rp – $4.50)

WIN (4 units)

2 PEARL CHAMPION (rp – $4.80)

WIN (3.5 units)

There are two runners in the fifth race that are worth backing to win, SPLENDOUR AND GOLD and PEARL CHAMPION. The former features in my Sweet In Defeat Files following a debut third where he didn’t get clear running in the straight. The latter horse, Pearl Champion managed to win last time overcoming adversity, so a repeat performance, even with more weight, will have him close to winning this.

Results: 1st @ $5.50 best corporate (+18 units) + 6th (-3.5 units) -> (+14.5 units)

RACE 11

14 SMILING PRIDE (rp – $4.50)

WIN (4 units)

12 CORDYCEPS (rp – $6.00)

WIN (3 units)

SMILING PRIDE and CORDYCEPS both jump out at me as horses that will run better than their early market prices. I’ve been impressed with how Jimmy Ting has handled Smiling Pride and I believe he has more to offer in this class with a light weight. Likewise Cordyceps was strong when running second to one of the favourites Follow Me when they met at their last start. A weight-swing will help Cordyceps turn the tables on him.

Results: 4th (-4 units) + 1st @ $7.50 best corporate (+19.5 units) -> (+15.5 units)

The heavy rain during the Sha Tin program really influenced the track, it was a huge advantage to be racing close to the rail and on the speed.

Have Fun Together ran an enormous race all things considered. He missed the kick by a couple of lengths before getting held up at the top of the straight, and made huge ground late and wide on the track.

Superich was brilliant and he looks a galloper with a lot of promise. He maintained a wide run and was powerful through the line. Noble Steed also did a good job to finish second, he’s got points in hand for the new season.

Shining On and Sunshine Holiday never really got into the race given how the track played.

So that brings to an end season 2017/18. Congratulations to John Size, Champion Trainer and Zac Purton, Champion Jockey for their achievements through out the term. It will certainly be a different landscape with Joao Moreira leaving to Japan and I look forward to unlocking plenty of winners factoring-in next season’s crop of jockeys!

Thanks for following Hutchi’s Honkers through out Hong Kong season 2017/18! It was satisfying to turn a seasonal profit, that was the goal and even though it wasn’t large, for bigger players who are able to earn rebates via their respective agencies, it’s been significant.

Cheers
