The Hong Kong Cup to me looks like Japanese-trained horses could dominate it with SUNGRAZER standing out as the best of them. He has arrived and worked very well in Hong Kong which when coupled with his strong form level including a super last-start second in the Tenno Sho (Autumn) makes him the horse to beat. DIERDRE has strong form too and might have more to offer than what has been exposed to date. She too has arrived in excellent order and looks super.

There are some very progressive horses in this event with NOBLE STEED being the hardest to beat of these. Last start he returned a sizzling last-400m sectional to run past NICCONI EXPRESS and even though there’s a weight-swing against Noble Steed, I believe he’ll still get his opportunity again from barrier 1. Along with Nicconi Express, Smart Boy and Gameplayer Emperor present as excellent quinella options.
Result: 2nd (-6 units) + 3rd, 4th & 10th (-3 units) -> (-9 units)

5 GOOD STANDING (rp – $5.00)
WIN (4 units)
11 CHARITY GO (rp – $6.50)
WIN (3 units)
GOOD STANDING signaled two starts ago that he was ready to win his first race in Hong Kong. He disappointed me on a rain-affected track last time and I’m happy to simply forget that performance as it was well below his best. I like the rider change and think he’ll run well today. CHARITY GO fought well on Hong Kong debut after leading up and being run down in the straight. With natural improvement and given the map, he can certainly win.
Result: 13th (-4 units) + 5th (-3 units) -> (-7 units)

3 NEW ASIA SUNRISE (rp – $3.50)
WIN (3 units) PLACE (5 units)
NEW ASIA SUNRISE is drawn to run a strong race at attractive each way odds in the penultimate event. He was somewhat unlucky last start and meets others like Raging Storm and Limitless better off in the weights today. With clear passage in the straight he’ll run well and can turn the tables on his opposition.
Result: 4th (-3 units)(-5 units) -> (-8 units)

The heavy rain during the Sha Tin program really influenced the track, it was a huge advantage to be racing close to the rail and on the speed.
Have Fun Together ran an enormous race all things considered. He missed the kick by a couple of lengths before getting held up at the top of the straight, and made huge ground late and wide on the track.
Superich was brilliant and he looks a galloper with a lot of promise. He maintained a wide run and was powerful through the line. Noble Steed also did a good job to finish second, he’s got points in hand for the new season.
Shining On and Sunshine Holiday never really got into the race given how the track played.
So that brings to an end season 2017/18. Congratulations to John Size, Champion Trainer and Zac Purton, Champion Jockey for their achievements through out the term. It will certainly be a different landscape with Joao Moreira leaving to Japan and I look forward to unlocking plenty of winners factoring-in next season’s crop of jockeys!
Thanks for following Hutchi’s Honkers through out Hong Kong season 2017/18! It was satisfying to turn a seasonal profit, that was the goal and even though it wasn’t large, for bigger players who are able to earn rebates via their respective agencies, it’s been significant.
