R9 POPLAR HANDICAP

summary

I’m not normally keen to bet too heavily into races on the all-weather but KING GENKI looks very well-placed in this event. Firstly he gets the step up to a mile, which is a positive following a decent run over 1200m (a trip too short). Secondly he’s pulled a favourable draw, barrier 2. Thirdly the 4.5kg claim means he will carry a luxurious weight for this class given his previous wins, and lastly, if the apprentice can jump and get him running from the barriers he should get every favour on the pace. He should be very hard to beat. ZILONG ran well on this surface at the end of last season and he can be in the finish. He’s getting down to a mark where he should be able to win a race off. TANG FLEMING went okay in a recent trial and he is a winner over the course and distance, while IMPERIAL CONCORDE will get back and be storming home. If the track plays with the rail being “off” that will certainly benefit him over others. That said, it is all about the Tony Cruz-trained horse King Genki and how apprentice Wong gets him going early.

speed

The pace should be GOOD here, with KING GENKI the logical leader at a GOOD speed overall. SIXTY SIXTY is drawn to lay-up behind him with MCMUNIGAL working across from a wide draw.
